Interreg MED Programme

Accelerating the Transition to a Circular Economy

Interreg CircleMED aims to convert the Med area into
circular-economy-based territories, accelerating the diffusion of circular and climate-neutral practices
and the green transition of the local civil, industrial and institutional systems.

Mission

What is CircleMED?

CircleMED points at reconciling our economies and human activities with the planetary boundaries, involving all stakeholders to promote the transition process to circular and sustainable production and consumption models, stimulating awareness and testing innovative circular solutions.

By testing solutions that already exist, but that have never been used together, the project aims at further developing and scaling up circular approaches, methodologies and strategies easily adaptable to any kind of territory.

Approach

How it works

CircleMED’s integrated and systemic approach targets all the four helix stakeholders to promote the transition process: it stimulates awareness and tests innovative circular solutions working closely with citizens, policy makers, business support organisations, academia and HER entities and additional stakeholders, sharing knowledge and responsibilities for the green transition.

Promoting Circularity

Actively promoting circular economy principles across all partner territories, fostering the transition from linear to circular models at every level of society.

Circular Assessment Tool

Testing resource efficiency through an innovative circular assessment tool for SMEs, enabling businesses to identify and act on their circular potential.

Transnational Circular Hubs

Creating a transnational network of territorial circular hubs that connect stakeholders, share knowledge, and coordinate action across the Mediterranean region.

Transferability of Results

Elaborating plans for the transferability of results in the whole Mediterranean area, so that every tested solution can be replicated and scaled beyond the project’s direct reach.

Actions

What we do

CircleMED applies the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA), targeting end-users needs and opportunities with their involvement all along the project — planning, execution, dissemination, demonstration, co-creation and co-ownership of results — moving from one-way “knowledge transfer” to mechanisms that facilitate “knowledge exchange” in networks. Inputs and evaluation by end-users (citizens/consumers, public authorities, enterprises) are an integral part of the project workflow.

Citizenship

CircleMED supports active citizen participation in the circular, collaborative and sharing economy — building knowledge, facilitating the transition and promoting socio-economic practices. The project aims to shift behaviours and attitudes, fostering understanding and involvement in the green transition through collaborative, bottom-up approaches to local action.

Business

CircleMED analyses, tests and implements assessment tools and solutions for the optimisation and implementation of circular economy approaches in local enterprises, enabling circular and climate neutral practices for transition.

This, by increasing the understanding and capacities related to circular economy mechanisms and solutions for businesses, creating interest and generating demand among potential users of the circular assessment tool.

Governance

CircleMED creates a pilot model to establish a transnational cooperative system to strengthen the Circular Economy in the MED area.

A number of local “Hubs” will be tested to promote the diffusion of circular and climate-neutral practices and monitor the sustainability of the transition process, while creating dialogue and synergies between all four helix stakeholders, building political support to sustainable solutions economically and socially benefiting all citizens.
